Vocabulary students should know before the trip:
As a way of helping students understand what they will see and hear about, it's recommended that students become familiar with some of the with the vocabulary they may encounter before the trip. Here are a few words students should know before going on the Jamestown Settlement trip.
Charter- A document issued by a sovereign, legislature, or other authority, creating a public or private corporation, such as a city, college, or bank, and defining its privileges and purposes.
Colony- A group of people who settle in a new place but keep ties to their homeland.
Settlement- The act of colonizing; the establishment of colonies.
Powhatan- Indian chief and founder of the Powhatan confederacy of tribes in eastern Virginia. He was also the father of Pocahontas.
Captain John Smith- English explorer who helped found the colony at Jamestown, Virginia. He was said to have been saved by Pocahontas.
Trade- The commercial exchange (buying and selling on domestic or international markets) of goods and services.
House of Burgesses- The lower house of legislature in colonial Virginia.
